Information Technology (IT) has become pervasive in current dynamic and often turbulent business environments. While in the past, executives could delegate, ignore or avoid IT decisions, this is now impossible in most sectors and industries. IT of course not only has the potential to support existing business strategies, but also to shape new strategies. In this mindset, IT becomes not only a success factor for survival and prosperity, but also an opportunity to differentiate and to achieve competitive advantage. IT finally also often entails large capital investments in organizations while companies are faced with multiple shareholders that are demanding the creation of business value through these investments.

Content

This masterclass consists of 4 modules of two days, each time addressing specific topics. In each module, models and concepts are explained and illustrated through cases and exercises. All in-class sessions will be highly interactive, with a lot of focus on sharing experiences and challenging ideas. Each participants receives the management book: “Enterprise Governance of IT: Achieving Strategic Alignment and Value” (Van Grembergen & De Haes, Springer, 2009) as reference material.

Business/IT Strategy & Alignment

IT has the potential to support existing strategies but also to shape new strategies. In this module, we address the business and IT strategy and alignment process. The idea behind strategic alignment is very comprehensive, but the question is how organisations can achieve this goal. To answer this challenge, we provide a pragmatic approach to define and align concrete business goals and IT goals.

IT Governance & Performance Management

In this module, we explain and illustrate how specific processes and structures can enable business and IT people to take up their role in strategic alignment and value creation. Performance management is positioned as one of the crucial processes in this area, both at the level of the IT department and on the level of individual IT related investments.

COBIT and VALIT as frameworks for IT Governance and Value Management 

COBIT and Val IT are widely adopted and recognised frameworks to support the adoption of IT governance and value management in an organisation. We address the key principles and building blocks of these frameworks to enable you to distil the necessary instruments out of these frameworks required for your specific needs.

IT Leadership and IT Governance Business Game

IT governance and IT leadership go hand in hand, both are needed for successful alignment and value creation. This module addresses the role of the CIO and the whole IT department in IT leadership. Also, an IT governance business game will be played, where the participants will learn how to adopt governance and management practices in a real-life case environment.
