What is Portfolio Management?

Portfolio management helps organizations make decisions about implementing the right changes to business as usual via projects and programmes. Portfolio management is not concerned with the detailed management of these projects and programmes; rather, it approaches the management of change projects and programmes from a strategic viewpoint.

The MoP® (Management of Portfolios) guidance provides senior executives and practitioners responsible for planning and implementing change, with a set of principles, techniques and practices to introduce or re-energize portfolio management. MoP helps organizations answer the fundamental question: Are we sure this investment is right for us and how will it contribute to our strategic objectives?

  • Investment is the key word because portfolio management is about investing in the right change initiatives and implementing them correctly.
  • Are we doing these things right?
  • Are we realizing all the benefits in terms of more effective services and efficiency savings from the changes we are implementing?

MoP defines portfolio management as: “A coordinated collection of strategic processes and decisions that together enable the most effective balance of organizational change and business as usual.”

Rather than representing a new discipline, portfolio management seeks to build on, and better coordinate, existing processes such as strategic planning, investment appraisal and project and programme management. Portfolio management is not concerned with the detailed management of these projects and programmes; rather, it approaches the management of change projects and programmes from a strategic viewpoint, focusing on the key issues outlined above.

The model below shows how MoP helps answer these questions and brings together the key activities required to successfully define and deliver a portfolio of change.

Unlike most methods, all portfolio management principles, cycles and practices are used at the same time, though at varying levels of intensity, depending on the organization and the environment in which it works.

This training for MoP is available from Manfred van Veghel, associated with the Accredited Training Organization Oppidum which is assessed and certified by AXELOS.

Implementing MoP can help organizations:

  • Ensure the projects and programmes provide the greatest financial benefits and contribution to strategic objectives.
  • Remove redundant or duplicate programmes and projects.
  • Manage resources more effectively.
  • Enhance transparency, accountability and corporate governance.
  • Achieve the best return from the total investment in change programmes and projects.
  • Improve engagement and communication between relevant stakeholders, in understanding and meeting organizational needs and expectations and in communicating strategic objectives.
  • Identify and prioritize the various initiatives, such as programmes or projects within the portfolio.

Purpose of the Foundation Certification

The purpose of the Foundation certification is to confirm that a candidate has sufficient knowledge and understanding to work as an informed member of a Portfolio Office or in a range of portfolio management roles. The Foundation certification is also a pre-requisite for the Practitioner certification.

Private Classroom

In a private classroom we can start as soon as you are available, and the study hours will be limited, because you do not have to wait for other students. Next to that, group classrooms (from other trainers) might be canceled a few days before they would start, when too few students signed up. So if you don't want to wait for weeks or months, for their next group classroom to start, chose for a private classroom.

It provides also an opportuntiy to use casus, focussing on your own situation and get feedback from a very experienced trainer. Input from standard classroom training is available to compensate the experiences other participants bring to the course.

You will be given access to an online e-learning environment to prepare for the exam. This provides the opportunity to practice at your own pace where you want when you have time.

Examination Format

  • Multiple choice examination questions
  • 50 questions per paper
  • 25 marks required to pass (out of 50 available) - 50%
  • 40 minutes duration
  • Closed book
