COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the VILT condensed version of the IPCFR carbonates
course. This course presents the Complete Recipe for Carbonate
& Fracture petrophysical evaluation, detailing a process
adopted and used successfully by numerous operators.
The course sets out a systematic plan of action for petrophysical
data acquisition, from drilling to well tests, highlighting the
problems and explaining the solutions. All data is ranked and
located carefully in the workflow, from drilling and LWD to logs,
well tests and hi-tech logs. The process provides a robust set of
results and a secure basis for decisions for any carbonate
reservoir. Log analysis Failure Points are listed and tied back to
the diverse physical characteristics of Carbonates. How to Drill,
Core, Log and Test specifically to address these Failure Points is
then explained. Drilling data, core, SCAL, logs, LithoScanner, NMR,
Dielectric, Sigma, Acoustic, Image-logs and MDTs are jigsaw puzzled
together to create the definitive set of results for any given
carbonate reservoir data set.
IPCFR VILT provides a wide array of delivery mechanisms to build a thorough understanding and documented process to properly evaluate carbonate and fracture wells and reservoirs.
IPCFR, introduced in 2004 and presented over 80 times worldwide, has become a benchmark for mainstream carbonate petrophysics by its focus on real-world carbonate petrophysical issues in an holistic, practical and straightforward manner.
COURSE STRUCTURE:
- 5 modules of 4 hours each, delivered over 5 days
- Optional: Pre-course self-learning module
- Optional: Post-course self learning module incl. Q&A opportunity
Course Level: Skill
Instructor: Mark Deakin
DESIGNED FOR YOU, IF YOU ARE:
- A petrophysicist, geologist, operation geologist, structural geologist, geo-modeller, reservoir engineer, well test engineer or core analyst, who uses or creates petrophysical results for carbonate or 'complex' reservoirs
Basic principles are reviewed; however, a year’s experience in
formation evaluation is desirable.
Ensure your laptop is loaded with the provided self-learning
modules.
Course content can be adapted to meet the participants'
requirements.
HOW WE BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE:
All ‘Integrated Petrophysics’ VILT courses have five components
to expand and maximise the course content delivery. Content is
varied and stimulating and includes short focused instructor
videos; course notes extracts; micro-practicals, cornerstone 4 hour
daily VILT sessions; before and after self-learning modules;
Question & Answer sessions; industry videos, exercises;
comprehensive Petrophysical Toolbox; Petro DB extracts; HPV
sensitivities; How to demos; Quizzes & Answers
1) Pre-course self-learning module (20%) with a 1-hour live Q&A
session before the main VILT
2) Cornerstone VILT: 4 hours of VILT lectures for 5 consecutive
days (60%)
- The first 15 minutes of EACH DAY: Recap and Questions session
- The first 5 minutes of EACH HOUR: Questions and feedback
3) Post-course self-learning module (20%) with a 1-hour live
Q&A session after one week
4) Instructor is available online for 1 hour extra at the end of
the main VILT session for questions & open discussion
5) Instructor is available to answer 1-on-1 emailed questions or
possible phone/skype calls for one week after the last VILT session
(during post-course self-learning module)
Before and After Self-Learning Modules
These modules are an important extra component of the course:
- Pre is designed to focus and prepare you for the main VILT session
- Post allows you to practise and quiz yourselves and the instructor before closing out the course
THE BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING:
- The course provides a much-needed systematic process for staff faced with the daunting prospect of managing Carbonate and complex reservoirs.
- Non-petrophysicists will learn how to quickly review geo-model input using the author’s “Greenlists”.

- Carbonate & fracture reservoir classifications: Lucia, Nelson, Aguilera
- Total porosity + clays vs total porosity + pore geometry. What to do
- How to use data and equations intelligently. Understanding Data Redundancy, Hierarchy and Equation Inversion
- Extreme pores, vugs, fractures and oil wetness: how to recognise and treat them
- Misleading data, useful data, powerful data. Carbonate & Fracture database essentials
